1998.5.16 - Gun barrel explosion
Black and white image of the 1.1-inch gun on the CONNOLLY after it burst. On 7 March 1945 a barrel on the 1.1 - inch gun exploded when it fired upon a mine spotted floating in the water. From the ship's Deck Log: "FRATUS, Daniel Joseph, S1c, 804 07 46, USNR, received a laceration and possible injury to the bone while at his battle station as Trainer on the 1.1" gun, due to a premature explosion in the muzzle of number 3 barrel of the 1.1" gun."
